These Boots Were Made For Walking
Ooo! I was so excited when my Jeffrey Campbell for Free People Skyler boots finally arrived in the land of Oz. I had seen them ages ago on the Free People website (we don’t have the store in Australia) and wish-listed them. Sadly, the black pair were sold out.
One day, months later while drooling over my wish list, I discovered the boots were back in stock! I bought them immediately, as well as a cute black and white striped layering top I’d been wanting for ages. I waited breathlessly for them to arrive. It took two or three weeks. And how cute is the box?
I’ve worn the top countless times since, but have ventured out in the boots only twice. The second time I even walked to work in them (a 20–25min stroll), which shocked the girls at the office. It shocked me too. Surprisingly they are quite well-balanced and not too difficult to walk in. I even forgot myself once and dashed a few steps in front of an oncoming car – not an effort I wish to repeat may I hastily add. These boots were made for walking – not running!
They really are stunners and will draw all eyes if you dare to wear. I love them.
Bold Over
I attended a family wedding at the end of March, and my eye was immediately drawn to this cool chunky necklace my cousin Amelia-Jane was wearing. Its bold and uncompromising graphic shapes and limited colour palette are reminiscent of Art Deco.
We had been looking forward to a rather bleak weekend weather-wise, so Amelia-Jane had decided against wearing the summery dress she had originally planned. Instead, she wore this pale gold Lurex knit with a pair of taupe trousers. Such a statement necklace, she said, lifted the outfit out of the ordinary – and she was right. Never underestimate the power of an accessory!
Sweet Temptation
I was like a child greedily pressing my nose up against the window of a sweet shop, which is apt since the jewellery in these windows does resemble old-fashioned hard-boiled lollies. Inexplicably, the store was closed, which was cruel: all these goodies just beyond my grasp.
I’d seen The Family Jewels credited in the pages of Australian Vogue, but this was the first opportunity I’d had to visit the store in Sydney in person, so it was very disappointing to be unable to enter this Aladdin’s Cave. Probably good for my purse though, since I wasn’t about to make like one of Ali Baba’s thieves.
But good news: you can shop online! There’s not anywhere near the same choice as the store, but enough to tempt you.
The Cat in the Hat
This clear plastic rain hat with ears from Sportsgirl was irresistible (as was the headline of this story). Rapunzel pulled it off a hook to show it to me and I immediately tried it on. “Am I a bit old for this?” I asked her doubtfully.
“You’re never too old for hats with ears,” she assured me.
I took her at her word. And it sure beats mum’s emergency plastic bag on head idea!
Sparkly Shoes Make Everyone Happy
Eeeeek! Look what I received in my inbox the day before yesterday! Wittner has introduced ‘Heel Steals’ – short-term sales on particular styles. Although I did not pay FULL price (club members receive discounts), I was quite chagrined to see my self-styled Dorothy ‘Jittery’ shoes slashed to $39.
However, as Cupcake, a work colleague, pointed out wisely, I have had them since December, and have many cherished moments of wear already. Hmm, I wore them on Christmas Day in the wrong size and had to take them off after an hour or two; they gave me such blisters on my toes on my birthday so I couldn’t dance a teensy bit … On the other hand, they give such delight to everyone else who sees them on my feet that pinched toes are consigned to the periphery.

Plus, my friend Amy was so excited to hear of the discount she immediately joined the club expressly to purchase the silver pair. Now, sparkly shoes that bring so much happiness can’t be bad, right? Especially on sale.
