- What I Actually Wore 163
Wrapped in Patterns
I was very excited when I made this Etsy purchase from Susie Q’s Vintage Shop. The 1950s navy saucer hat was just so irresistible. I could wear it on the beach, and the gingham pattern made it perfect for picnics too. When it finally arrived in the post, I was delighted by the packaging: the seller had wrapped the hat in old dress patterns. Quaint; a great little recycling tip; and photogenic as well. See me modelling it here.
Feeling Blue
Last week Upsie-Daisy finished up working at the theatre after something like six years. We were all very sad to see her go of course, but happy she was going on to something exciting, and still in the arts precinct so she wouldn’t be too far away for lunchtime reunions.
In celebration, she suggested we (in our respected departments) all dress up in different colours each day in the ten days leading up to her departure. She set up a spreadsheet immediately indicating which colours were to be worn on which day. I don’t work Mondays, so missed out on yellow (which I was very disappointed about), and Upsie-Daisy herself was a fail on the day! She had forgotten to account for the fact she actually had no yellow in her wardrobe. One day was allocated for spots or stripes – I was pleased to combine the two, although stripes proved to be more popular.
Here we all are on red day, her penultimate – by this time the rest of the company had twigged to what was going on. On her last day we all, aptly, wore blue.
From Mess to Less
Rather ambitiously, at about 9.30 tonight I decided to sort out all my vintage hats. I was running short of space in my hatboxes to store them all, and I knew there were some among them that ought to be culled. I had another purpose: spring has truly sprung and it was time to do the seasonal wardrobe changeover. The winter hats should be put away and the summer ones brought out.
I retrieve the hatboxes from storage and turfed out the contents – my living room looked like a milliner’s boutique had exploded. I managed to weed out about ten hats, most of which will go to charity, but there are one or two worthy of being offered up for sale on eBay.
A few big summer hats perch on my hatstand for easy access, and the rest are in hatboxes. The winter hats have been lovingly wrapped in tissue and gone into storage to hibernate over the warmer months. I feel quite pleased with my industry. Less is more.
A Turn Up For the Boots
This is the first pair of shoes I bought from Solestruck. Candy pink, soft suede, low heel, ankle boot – all equal immediate walking comfort. That’s a bit of a turn up for the boots for me!
When you bookmark the Solestruck website, the description – their mission – reads ‘to rid the world of ugly shoes one pair at a time’. It makes me chuckle, not least because there really are some doozies on there. Shoes I am fairly sure we will gasp and shudder in horror at in about 20 years’ time. Our children, however, will think they are fab; real retro teensies style, and will raid our closets for vintage loot.
The Princess and the Pea
Last Sunday it was Father’s Day, and in the Melbourne burbs, the next day was Hard Rubbish Collection Day – another important date on the calendar.
Dad picked me up from the train station, and on the drive back to the ancestral estate, we passed a large stack of mattresses. Instantly, the old fairy tale of the Princess and the Pea sprang to mind, and I determined to find time that afternoon to return to photograph it.
Later, one of my nieces agreed to accompany me on the expedition, and we walked back for a mini photoshoot. I must admit, I was far more worried about the wobbly stack of mattresses toppling over than random mashed peas!
