Bob Cuts
Celebrating the Roaring Twenties in a Special Series
While I am still happy with a bob haircut (and loooooving short hair in general), each time I visit my hairdresser Alex from Lady Marmalade, I have to indulge him and let him do something a little different – otherwise he gets bored. (And a bored hairdresser is a dangerous hairdresser.)
After cross-examining me about what I was into at the moment (minimalism), Alex came to the conclusion that a sharper, more geometric cut would be the go this time. The last few bobs my hair has either angled up or down, with a more three-dimensional look; this time he cut it straight across for a simpler shape. He also left my bangs much longer than previously, which of course means he will see me sooner than usual for a trim.
I have flirted with bobs all my life in many permutations, but not quite as many as this collection found at Glamour Daze. (I have never been tempted by sideburns, for instance – Leatrice Joy’s hairdo below is distinctly joyless.) Why do I like a bob so much, I wondered? It’s classic, simple, elegant, but it is also cute, sexy and somewhat fey. I am sure I am much more mischievous wearing a bob too! And of course I like it simply because I have been enamoured of the 1920s forever.
Whenever I have cut my hair short again after growing it, everyone always exclaims how much it suits me – and I reflect how by comparison I feel so dowdy with long hair. I think I will be wearing it short for a while to come. (I might let Alex cut it into a different style one day though. Maybe. It won’t have sideburns though.)
Brand Spanking New
It’s a brand spanking new year! A fresh day all shiny and sparkling with promise. In Melbourne it has in fact been overcast and raining much of the day, but that is just when an introspective mood overtakes me, which is perfect for thinking deep thoughts and contemplating resolutions.
While it’s great to make such vows as eating healthily, finding that new job or making other worthy goals, this year I am more concerned with immaterial things: such that will make my intellectual, emotional and spiritual life richer and more meaningful. Healthy food for the soul, if you will.
I don’t want the moon, I just want my spirit to soar above those rainy day clouds to glimpse the sunshine beyond; to remember to stop and smell the roses from time to time; to think uplifting thoughts, and not dwell on the negatives; to live a life that is true; to be a better a friend, sister, daughter – a better human being. And before I become too pious, let there always be something or someone to tug me back down to earth again.
Here is wishing you a happy new year and all the best for a dazzling 2014 ahead, my dear Snapettes – thank you for coming by!
Out With a Bang!
Well another year has ended, so quickly too! Where on earth did 2013 go? It just flashed past like that. Did you have a fabulous year, or are you glad to see the back of it? Whichever it was, here’s to a wonderful evening celebrating what’s past and looking forward to what is to come. I’ll be dancing into the night in this vintage 70s silver lurex polka-dotted backless maxidress – it’s the perfect party dress.
Happy New Year to you!
On Christmas Night
The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads … And Tatiana in her vintage 1920s silk boudoir cap, donned her silk Vietnamese vintage wrap*, and planned on lounging glamorously all the next day sipping wild hibiscus champagne and nibbling on raspberry flavoured Lindor balls while everyone else rushed around like mad things in the heat flinging their money around in the Boxing Day sales as though they had not spent enough already this Christmas.
It has been a lovely Christmas Day, fa-la-la, and while the clock will shortly strike midnight in Melbourne, somewhere on the other side of the world people are still enjoying it. A very Merry Christmas to you all, with love!

Twas the Night Before Christmas
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring … except for a mouse!
A mouse in a 1950s cocktail hat, a mille feuille of black crin accented with a giant pearl bead. Earlier this year, I purchased this sweet little topper on Etsy, from The Vintage Hat Shop, and I wasn’t the only one who remarked it looked like I had donned a pair of Mickey Mouse ears.
But more to the point, what are you doing this Christmas Eve? This little mouse is about to get busy baking lots of tiny little lemon cheesecakes (how apt) for a family lunch tomorrow. Must scamper … enjoy your evening!
